Tamil wedding invitation wording: samples and etiquette

By Nilav Ventures. Published . 3 min read.

Quick answer: A good Tamil wedding invitation names both families with their honorifics, states the muhurtham time and venue clearly, and closes with a warm request to attend and bless the couple. Keep the wording short enough to read on a phone.

Wording is the part of a wedding invitation people read most carefully, and the part families care about most. This guide gives practical structures and samples you can adapt. Please ask an elder in your family to confirm names, titles and spellings before anything is published.

What a Tamil wedding invitation usually contains

  1. A blessing or invocation at the top, if your family follows that tradition.
  2. The names of the parents or elders who are inviting.
  3. A line of invitation, such as a request to attend the wedding of their children.
  4. The names of the bride and groom.
  5. The muhurtham date, day and time, and the venue with the town.
  6. Other events such as the engagement, reception or lunch.
  7. A closing line and, if you wish, the names of relatives welcoming guests.

On a phone, keep each item in its own short block. A long single paragraph is hard to read, especially for older relatives.

Sample wording in Tamil

Here is a short invitation line that families often adapt:

எங்கள் இல்ல திருமண விழாவிற்கு தாங்கள் தங்கள் குடும்பத்துடன் வருகை தந்து, மணமக்களை வாழ்த்தி அருள வேண்டுகிறோம்.

In English this means: “We request you to attend our family’s wedding with your family and to bless the couple.”

Some useful words you will see on invitations:

Tamil Meaning
திருமணம் Wedding
முகூர்த்தம் Muhurtham, the auspicious wedding time
மணமகன் Groom
மணமகள் Bride
நிச்சயதார்த்தம் Engagement
வரவேற்பு Reception

Sample wording in English

Together with their families, Name of parents request the pleasure of your company at the wedding of their son Groom with Bride, daughter of Name of parents, on day, date at time, at venue, town. Your blessings and presence will make the day complete.

Etiquette notes worth checking

  • Honorifics and order of names. Follow your family’s custom for who is listed first and how elders are addressed.
  • Muhurtham time. Write the exact time and say if guests should arrive earlier. Confirm it with the priest, not from a template.
  • Both languages, same facts. If you publish in Tamil and English, make sure dates, times and spellings match in both.
  • Names of children and elders. Spell them the way the family writes them in official documents.
  • Venue clarity. Add the town and a nearby landmark, then a map link on the website version.

Making it work on a phone

Tamil script needs a little more line height than English to be comfortable to read. On a website invitation we use fonts that are already on the guest’s phone, so Tamil appears correctly on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac without a large download. Always test the invitation on an older Android phone before you share it widely.
